In 2010, with the World Cup Soccer Tournament being hosted by South Africa, the Cape Town International Airport saw a massive influx of people from all over the world scrambling to get a seat in one of the brand new stadiums. The Airport itself has undergone massive reconstructive surgery to cater for the growing number of tourists and home-coming Capetonians; a number that now stands at almost eight million annually! The colossal renovations that were completed earlier this year saw the joining of the international and domestic terminals, which were formerly separated. The Cape Town International Airport now features one giant and beautifully architectured check-in area that is designed to streamline traffic and make the entire procedure as smooth and hassle-free as possible.
Once passengers have completed the necessary check-in, there is the rest of the airport to explore, which boasts a great variety of both general and specialized shopping stores, restaurants, coffee shops, banking facilities, Internet lounges, bars and the ubiquitous South African biltong shops (sundried and spiced meat). The Cape Town International Airport itself is situated in what is widely regarded to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The renovations that amounted to R1.6 billion (ZAR), or $200 million (USD), also saw a massive expansion of the airport’s parkade.
